River shaping up for now…..
The hot temps didn’t last and typical spring weather has returned. Nights have been below freezing and days have been cool slowing the snow melt considerably. The Bitterroot has dropped a great deal since hitting flood stage a week ago. The water is clearing up as well. Even though the water is up and moving at a could clip you can still fish it. Best places to focus are the side channels and slower runs. Most fish are being caught on nymphs but there can be a little dry fly action if you are in the right spot when bugs are hatching. There are still some Skwala’s on the water, may flies ( March Brown, Gray drake) and Caddis. Use caution as the river is moving fast and some of the trees have moved around. this window of opportunity shouldn’t last long as temperatures are forecast to get back in the mid 70’s this week.
