Dry fly action improving!

Fishing has slowly improved over the last couple weeks. However, most of the trout have beed caught on nymphs under a big dry… Surface activity has begun to turn on this past week and we have caught several nice fish on Skwala dries.. Water temperature are still quite cold at about 40 degrees. It’s mostly an afternoon game right now.. This weekends forecast is for warm days in the 50’s . This should bump those water temperature up and get the fish and bugs moving. I anticipate the dry fly action to really turn on in the coming days . See ya on the river…….

The Bitterroot valley is experiencing some early spring weather this week…Temperatures are expected to be in the 50’s for several days. Ice is breaking up on the river and this warmer weather should get the bugs and fish moving.. Water temps are still in the 30’s so look to fish in the afternoon. Fish nymphs (especially Skwalas) in the deeper slow runs… Dry fly action should begin in about 2 weeks…. See ya on the river!

Winter Update!

After a mild January , February has brought winter back in a big way.. Not much fishing lately with the river iced up thanks to several nights of sub zero temps. Snow pack was below average in January but has rebounded to 104% after the mountains received over 5 feet snow in a week. Although it doesn’t feel like spring fishing is around the corner… Look for the Skwala hatch to begin in 4-6 weeks …

Water levels have dropped significantly in the last week and fishing has improved greatly.. Salmon flies are emerging throughout the Bitterroot, East ,and West Forks. We are entering one of the prime times of the season. As water levels continue to drop, hatches and fishing will improve. Golden stones and Green Drakes are beginning to emerge creating some excellent dry fly fishing. See ya on the river!
Hatches:
